WHAT'S A SHEEP TO DO?
To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his
voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he
has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow
him, for they know his voice. A stranger they will not follow, but they
will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers."
John 10:3-5 ESV
¶It
seems to me the sheep have three choices. They can (1) remain penned up
in the bounds of the sheepfold, where they may feel safe for a time
until they (a) run out of resources, or (b) are consumed by devouring
predators, (2) they may follow the shepherd out of the fold, but then
wander off on their own. But the ones who (3) hear his voice, and
follow, find themselves in verdant pastures, along living streams, in
the comfort of his rod and staff, at a table spread before them in the
presence of their enemies.
