ANOTHER IDOL FACTORY
Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.
1 Corinthians 10:14 ESV
What
do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an
idol is anything? No, I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to
demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons.
You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot
partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons. Shall we
provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than he?
1 Corinthians 10:19-22 ESV
¶Paul
confronts his contemporaries on the issue of eating food offered to
idols with language from the Second Commandment: “You shall not make for
yourself an idol...You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the
Lord your God, am a jealous God." The scarcity today of foods
sacrificed and offered to idols does not obviate the relevance of Paul's
concern, for, as John Calvin famously observed, "the human heart is
perpetually an idol factory". The implication of course is that there be
demons here today as well. It does not nullify God's concern for a
heart totally devoted to Him, a mind focused on remembering and
recognizing His mighty works, and a life loyal to the Heavenly King.
