FREEDOM HAS NO NAME HERE

Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole earth." And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. And the Lord said, "Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.
Genesis 11:4‭-‬6 ESV

¶The residents of Babel did not want to be dispersed, but to make for themselves a name. This does not sound like the desire of free people, but of a dictator who derives power from concentrating resources unto himself, suppressing dissent and freedom. It was the opposite of the Genesis 1 mandate to be fruitful, fill the earth, and subdue it. A people that exalts their name, their place, their language, their culture over all others is no longer a nation "under God".

He asks their opinion. He asks them to inquire of the Lord for themselves, and decide. They have the opportunity to bring the ark of God close to them in their midst.
