A WAY OUT OF THE PIT
"Job 33:23 If there be for him an angel, a
mediator, one of the thousand, to declare to man what is right for him,
24 and he is merciful to him, and says, 'Deliver him from going down
into the pit; I have found a ransom;"
"26 then man prays to God, and he accepts him; he sees his face with a shout of joy, and he restores to man his righteousness."
-Job 33:23-24, 26 ESV
¶Job
had declared out of his calamity "The thing that I most feared has
happened to me". Job was living his life in fear of "going down into the
pit". Such will be the worry of all of us who are defending ourselves
according to our own righteousness. Quit striving to stand upon your own
righteousness, Job. "But what else do I have to stand on? It's all I
have left to me." he might answer. But Elihu expresses the longing,
possibly for an angel, from among God's thousands, who could come to
deliver us out of the pit, based not just upon our personal power, or
prosperity, but upon a righteousness imparted to us from above. This is
the ultimate hope of Israel, and the culmination of the Holy Scriptures.
This is Jesus. At His appearance we shall be made like Him. The apostle
John says that everyone who thus hopes purifies themselves.
