JACOB BECOMES ISRAEL
Then he said, "Let me go, for the day has
broken." But Jacob said, "I will not let you go unless you bless me."
And he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob." Then he
said, "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you
have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed." Then Jacob
asked him, "Please tell me your name." But he said, "Why is it that you
ask my name?" And there he blessed him.
Genesis 32:26-29 ESV
¶We
watch this scene as it unfolds with bated breath, for it depicts the
fate not just of Jacob the usurper, but of all Israel and her heirs.
Rather than trust in the blessing of the Abrahamic covenant to which he
is already heir, Jacob still struggles with God to obtain the blessing.
At stake are all his wives, servants, property, and most of all his
sons, who carry in their loins all the future generations of the people
of the promise. Without Jacob, they all might merely pass to Esau as
property and servants, and along with Esau become Edomites. By scheming
Jacob has made himself heir to the covenant promises of God, and on him
the promises rest. The blessing must not end with him. But he cannot
prevail in this as Jacob. He must be transformed. He must be born again,
and the new name he receives, Israel, is the one by which all God's
people, both Old and New Testament, will be identified. Wounded in the
hip, as Israel he goes forth to confront his brother Esau, and from
Israel will emerge the Single Faithful Remnant, the One Savior of the
world, upon whom all the blessings of God's covenant promises ultimately
rest.
