WHAT? MORE MERCY?
Now Ahaziah fell through the lattice in his upper
chamber in Samaria, and lay sick; so he sent messengers, telling them,
"Go, inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I shall recover
from this sickness." But the angel of the Lord said to Elijah the
Tishbite, "Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria,
and say to them, 'Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are
going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? Now therefore thus
says the Lord, You shall not come down from the bed to which you have
gone up, but you shall surely die.'" So Elijah went.
2 Kings 1:2-4
¶God
show his mercy in making very clear the terms of His covenant with us.
In Deuteronomy 30:11-14, Moses speaking says "it is not up in heaven, so
that you have to ask, “Who will ascend into heaven to get it and
proclaim it to us so we may obey it?” Nor is it beyond the sea, so that
you have to ask, “Who will cross the sea to get it and proclaim it to us
so we may obey it?” No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth
and in your heart so you may obey it."
Nevertheless His mercy
did not end with this. Rather than judging us strictly according to the
covenant, he sent prophets to reach out to God's people in their
disobedience and offer them correction and restoration.
But the
prophets themselves spoke of a time when their corrective exhortations
would no longer be necessary. "No longer will each man teach his
neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ because they will all
know Me." This promise of Jeremiah 31:34 finds its fulfillment in the
completed Word of God in Testaments, both New and Old, charged with
life-changing power of the Holy Spirit for all who hear it and receive
it by faith.
