UNBREAKABLE, UNOFFENDABLE
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on
earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,
but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor
rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
Matthew 6:19-20 ESV
¶In
its long history, Israel as a nation has been repeatedly subjected to
the breakage and thievery of its neighbors. This is the burden Israel
took on when it chose to be like the nations and take for itself a king,
and it continued to hope for in the form of an earthly messiah. It is
upon this history that Jesus offers a more secure foundation, secured
not by earthly treasures, but by Himself, laid up for us in the place He
has gone to prepare for us. Jesus may have wept over Lazarus, and over
Jerusalem, but He was never offended. His personal rights and dignity
never needed defending. His tools in this were prayer and immediate
intimate knowledge of the Scriptures.
