THE POISON OF PRESUMPTION
Beware lest there be among you a man or
woman or clan or tribe whose heart is turning away today from the Lord
our God to go and serve the gods of those nations. Beware lest there be
among you a root bearing poisonous and bitter fruit, one who, when he
hears the words of this sworn covenant, blesses himself in his heart,
saying, 'I shall be safe, though I walk in the stubbornness of my
heart.' This will lead to the sweeping away of moist and dry alike. The
Lord will not be willing to forgive him, but rather the anger of the
Lord and his jealousy will smoke against that man, and the curses
written in this book will settle upon him, and the Lord will blot out
his name from under heaven.
Deuteronomy 29:18-20 ESV
¶On the
verge of extending His covenant grace toward Israel, God warns against
the false confidence of anyone who plans to go on sinning under this
sworn covenant. They would be adding to their sin the additional sin of
presumption. He is a fool who thinks he can go on sinning expecting to
be forgiven later. Jesus says to him "Fool, this very night your very
soul may be required of you!" (Luke 12:20). "Make haste to be
reconciled" (Matthew 5:24). "Let not the sun go down upon your wrath"
(Ephesians 4:26). "If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have
received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left"
(Hebrews 10:26). Go and offer your false repentance and your sacrifices
to whatever god you are truly following, but it is not the Lord God of
Israel.
