OUR WEAKEST POINT
My son, if you have put up security for your
neighbor, have given your pledge for a stranger, if you are snared in
the words of your mouth, caught in the words of your mouth, then do
this, my son, and save yourself, for you have come into the hand of your
neighbor: go, hasten, and plead urgently with your neighbor.
Proverbs 6:1-3 ESV
¶In
his letter, instead of being rash about our commitments, James invites
us to pray about our decisions, and wisdom will be granted. There is a
weak point here. James says it is the tongue. What ensnares us are our
own words. An oath sworn, a deed signed, a word spoken in haste, these
are what can steer a ship, light a blaze, and change our lives. In the
face of folly, grace is channeled to those who pray as Nineveh did:
"perhaps God may yet relent."
