ON THE SCARLET CORD HANGS THE PROMISE
Now then, please swear to me by
the Lord that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal
kindly with my father's house, and give me a sure sign that you will
save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who
belong to them, and deliver our lives from death." And the men said to
her, "Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business
of ours, then when the Lord gives us the land we will deal kindly and
faithfully with you." And she said, "According to your words, so be it."
Then she sent them away, and they departed. And she tied the scarlet
cord in the window.
Joshua 2:12-14, 21 ESV
¶Is Rahab
recognized in Hebrews' pantheon of faith because she lied to the king of
Jericho about the spies she was harboring? No, there were any number of
ways God could have delivered His people into their promised land
without her lies. She demonstrated her faith by casting her lot with
this wandering tribe of Israelites. To rescue the desperate and the
fleeing, it is not enough to encourage other people to have more faith.
Our own faith is being tested as well. The ultimate test of Rahab's
faith was not in whether she would lie for God, but in whether she could
rely on the promise of a scarlet cord.
