MORE THAN MEETS THE "I"
This is the rejoicing city that dwelt
carelessly, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me:
how is she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! Every
one that passeth by her shall hiss, and wag his hand.
Zephaniah 2:15 KJV
¶The Septuagint Greek translation of this passage uses just two words
"ego emei" to translate This claim of Nineveh "I am, and there is none beside
me". Ego is what we imagine ourselves to be, our selfish self, but as a
full description of what it means to be human, it fails on so many
levels. It ignores the part of us that is not "ego", that desires to be
connected with others, and to be connected with our own inner selves.
Nineveh rejoices in its greatness, oblivious to its dark side, ignoring
its final end.
