DELIVERED FROM OURSELVES
O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger, nor
discipline me in your wrath! For your arrows have sunk into me, and your
hand has come down on me. There is no soundness in my flesh because of
your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin. Do
not forsake me, O Lord! O my God, be not far from me! Make haste to help
me, O Lord, my salvation!
Psalm 38:1-3, 21-22 ESV
¶What
is it that makes David, full of the arrows of the One whose indignation
he fears, call upon that One to save him? David addresses three
enemies: himself, other people, and God. He focuses his concern on the
enemy that can do him most harm, God, and addresses the sin that
separates them, and then turns to that same God. How could the same One,
whose wrath David bears, be his deliverance as well?
