BUT THERE'S MORE!
I have seen the business that God has given to the
children of man to be busy with. He has made everything beautiful in its
time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot
find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. I perceived
that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good
as long as they live; also that everyone should eat and drink and take
pleasure in all his toil—this is God's gift to man.
Ecclesiastes 3:10-13 ESV
¶Yet
even in the proclaiming of his views, Solomon purports to do what in
his agnostic view he says cannot be done. He expounds on man, his nature
and his destiny, a categorical assertion of what cannot be known that
is self-contradictory. He claims to know what he admits cannot be known.
He claims exhaustive knowledge "under the sun" of what can only be
known "under heaven", that is, the meaning and purpose of our lives.
There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,
Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.
- Hamlet (1.5.167-8), Hamlet to Horatio
