ANOTHER WAY TO HIDE FROM GOD
"For this commandment that I command you
today is not too hard for you, neither is it far off. It is not in
heaven, that you should say, 'Who will ascend to heaven for us and bring
it to us, that we may hear it and do it?' Neither is it beyond the sea,
that you should say, 'Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to
us, that we may hear it and do it?' But the word is very near you. It is
in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.
Deuteronomy 30:11-14 ESV
¶Again,
consider Yuri Gargarin, who did in fact "ascend to the heavens", and
who found nothing there that to him resembled his idea of God. The
modern morality gap results when we escape from God not by running away,
like Jonah, but in the exaltation of the search, the trust in science,
the putting off of faith in pursuit of just a little more data. Then
searching for truth is just another way to hide from it.
"The
modern way to flee from God is to rush ahead and ahead, as quickly as
the beams before sunrise, to conquer more and more space in every
direction, in every humanly possible way, to be always active, to be
always planning, and to be always preparing." Paul Tillich, New York,
1955.
The digging, the climbing, all become ways to substitute for simply hearing and doing God's word. The struggle lies not in the difficulty of doing, but in the wilfulness of our own hearts in obeying. Who will rescue us from this body of death?
