WHAT'S IN THE BOX?
There was nothing in the ark except the two
tablets of stone that Moses put there at Horeb, where the Lord made a
covenant with the people of Israel, when they came out of the land of
Egypt.
1 Kings 8:9 ESV
¶In keeping with ancient Near Eastern
practice, the two tablets were duplicates of the covenant document that
established Israel as God's covenant people, not two sections of the Ten
Commandments. (Exodus 31:18) One copy belonged to each party of the
covenant, Since Israel's copy was to be laid up in the presence of her
God, both covenant tablets were placed in the ark. It was a picture of
God finding a dwelling place among His people.
