KING OF RIGHTEOUSNESS? WHAT RIGHTEOUSNESS?
For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever. Hebrews 7:1-3 ESV
¶None are righteous, no not one. Melchizedek, king of righteousness, would be king of no one without the free gift of righteousness given to those who believed. To Abraham righteous standing was given, by faith, by God, before God. His trust in God was what was reckoned to him as righteousness. Abraham, with eyes of faith, recognized Melchizedek, king of righteousness, as his king, and gave him his due. In doing so, he gave his tribute to the One who would come after him as the true heir to the title King of Righteousness, Jehovah-Tsidkenu (Jeremiah 33:16), the Lord our Righteousness.
