RIDDLE ME THIS

I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will express my riddle on the harp. Why should I fear in days of adversity, When the iniquity of my foes surrounds me, Even those who trust in their wealth And boast in the abundance of their riches?

Psalms 49:4-6 NASB

¶In the wisdom literature, wise sayings exist as riddles. A riddle looks at an existing situation and challenges us to think about it differently, to "think outside the box". We are asked to stop and think. The Buddhist sayings known as koans may seem enigmatic and contradictory, but they are not meant to be unanswerable. The answer may just lie outside the obvious. In Psalm 49: 4-6, surrounded by our enemies, the obvious first response is fear. The riddle, o little one, o ye of little faith, is this: "Why should you fear?"
