AN IMPOSSIBLE DREAM?
For behold, the Lord God of hosts is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah support and supply, all support of bread, and all support of water; the mighty man and the soldier, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder, the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor and the skillful magician and the expert in charms. And I will make boys their princes, and infants shall rule over them. And the people will oppress one another, every one his fellow and every one his neighbor; the youth will be insolent to the elder, and the despised to the honorable.
Isaiah 3:1-5 ESV
¶Ever the astute observer, Isaiah notices what happens when the powerful abdicate their responsibility to serve God and their people, and instead serve only themselves. Chaos, the chaos of inexperienced youth, eventually emerges to replace it. The rulers may change, but the people remain oppressed. Jesus's double revolution, on the other hand, not only addresses abuses of power, but the way Kingdom change occurs. Jesus people changed their world, not with the sword, but with love. When Jesus went up the mount, He saw, and announced, that a Kingdom was coming through the accusation, insults, and persecution of meek, poor in spirit, merciful peacemakers. To the would-be reformers of this world, this is no strategy at all. In fact, it is not a "strategy" at all. It is just true. Not just "my truth", but true. It is the end in itself. The kingdom of God is among us now. Not wishful thinking, but the obvious response to the actions of a covenant-keeping God. Read of it in the Testaments, both New and Old, and find your place in the Kingdom!
