REST FROM WEARY WORKS
His (God's) work has been finished since the
creation of the world. "Today," saying through David, "Today, if you
hear his voice, do not harden your hearts." For if Joshua had given them
rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. So then, there
remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered
God's rest has also rested from his works, just as God did from his. Let
us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest.
Hebrews 4:3, 7-11 ESV
¶Moses appointed for God's people the day of the Sabbath to be a time of rest. Joshua won for God's people the land of Canaan as a place of rest. But there was another promised rest still to be gained. Hebrews says that rest was actually part of the work of God finished since the creation of the world. But it still for us to make every effort to enter that rest. What sort of effort is this? It is to cease from striving, to lay our weary burden down, to stop defending our own self-righteousness, to stop judging ourselves based on how we look to other people, stop making excuses and blaming others for our problems. Hebrews says the day is Today. No need to build up stores for another Sabbath rest. The work is finished.
Come, all ye pining, hungry poor,
The Saviour’s bounty taste;
Behold a never-failing store
For every willing guest.
Trust in the righteousness of Christ alone.
